I am catching them now in empty boxes by tossing craft eggs in there. They seem to hate them in there and it gives them a real incentive to go in box and remove them. I had not heard a HOSP on my street in several weeks, but I heard one today singing near my empty side box. I looked in the box and there were a couple HOSP droppings in there, indicating he had been in it.
I put 3 little plastic mottled eggs (these ones were wren sized) in bottom of box and set Van Ert trap. It got quiet real quick. Trap was sprung and he had shoved all three little plastic eggs out of the hole in the Van Ert trap onto the ground while he was trapped in that box. HOSP HATE craft eggs.... You put the ersatz eggs in a compartment they were occupying and that lured them back into the compartment? Is that correct?

Paula is talking about Bluebird boxes. Yes, she puts them in the box and from what she says below, it gives the House Sparrows an incentive to go in the box and remove them. She puts a trap in that box and catches them.

Cool. I'll keep that in mind for my Purple Martin housing in the future when I get a problem HOSP. Thanks

You'll have to let us know how it works for Purple Martins.
