SuperGourds

The SuperGourd is a one-piece, 10" plastic gourd with a molded-in, threaded access port, covered by a watertight, screw-on cap. Just twist the cap off for nest checks, nest replacements, or end-of-season cleanouts. The access port’s high, 45-degree viewing angle allows easy viewing of nest contents.

The SuperGourd’s large, molded-in rain canopy doubles as a perching platform. A series of molded-in corduroy-like ribs on top of the canopy and a textured pattern in the plastic permit martins to perch comfortably, without slipping. The SuperGourd’s one-piece body has no seams, so no rain will leak in, and six 1/4" drain holes provide a rapid exit for any rain that blows in through the entrance hole. The SuperGourd is blow-molded in white (sun-reflecting), opaque, high-density polyethylene plastic, with ultraviolet inhibitors added for long life.

One set of 7/32" hanging holes (side to side) are pre-drilled; a set of front-to-back hanging holes can easily be drilled by the purchaser. The SuperGourd is an attractive and reasonably-priced alternative for landlords too busy to grow (or buy), and then paint and modify natural (or plastic) gourds. The SuperGourd has all the advantages of a natural gourd, plus the added benefits of long life, low maintenance, and easy, weather-tight access. Weight approximately 32 ounces.

The SuperGourd now comes with either the standard round hole (SG), with a diameter of 2-1/32," or the crescent, starling-resistant entrance hole (SGC), with a height of 1-3/16". Note: Mixed hole types (SG, SGC) can not be combined in a single package, nor qualify for larger quantity discounts. Starling-resistant entrance holes work effectively at either new or established colony sites to keep European Starlings, the introduced species that plagues conventional martin housing, out.

Since the introduction of starlings into North America in the late 1800's, many of our native cavity-nesting species have declined. Starlings take over martin housing, chase away martins seeking nest sites, and will destroy eggs and nestlings and even kill adult martins. Unlike other methods of starling control that demand active landlord management, (such as trapping, nest removal, or shooting), these holes will keep starlings out 24 hours a day, whether the landlord is there or not. Thus, these holes are especially helpful when martin housing is at a weekend cottage, or at sites where landlords cannot control starlings effectively by other means.
